2011 Season - Week 17
Chief Finally Lasts The Distance
In 2009 Chief led the “Hunt for the Papas Fritas” from week 11 to week 14 only to fall behind Johnnie in week 15. Last year he led from week 10 to week 15 only for Johnnie to pass him with two weeks to go. This year he took the lead in week two and never looked back (though Craig was just two points behind after week 11) winning by 126 points. Chief was also second in 2008 behind Wayne, so after finishing runner up for three straight years he went one better than the early 90s Buffalo Bills who were beaten in four straight Superbowls, finally winning his second Championship, 9 years after his first one. His final total of 639 points is the second highest BUMS total of all-time behind Andy H’s record 670 in 2007 and 51 ahead of Johnnies third place total from when he won in 2009. In just his third year, Craig was the runner-up.
Daz Wins Conference, Again
Like Chief, Daz won the Conference for his second time having also won it back in 2004. Behind the passing of Aaron Rodgers and rushing of Ray Rice there was only one reason he didn’t score more than his impressive 500 point total (the highest Conference score since Ron won in 2006 with 548). His Franchise kicker Jeff Reed (formally of Pittsburgh) did not find a roster spot this year and so Daz had no kicker for 7 weeks before signing New Orleans John Kasay. Dave G returns to the Big League (after 2 years) as the runner-up, with Cheryl third and bouncing straight back.
Going Down, Again
With David S and Aaron already down the final drop spot had been a furious battle between four owners all of whom were in the dropzone in the last three weeks. Marcus’ Hall of Fame week last week had made him safe and Mark followed that with a 53 point week this week which was his 10th visit to the Halls and also kept him up. That left Wayne and H fighting for survival. Before the Sunday Night Cowboys at Giants game Wayne was done and holding a 15 point lead over H who still had two Giants Receivers (Cruz and Nicks) to play. Needing three TDs, when Cruz scored just 5 minutes into the game, escape for H looked quite possible. But it took another 52 minutes before Hicks scored with 3:46 remaining and so H fell three points short and returns to the Conference for a second time. He was promoted in 2003.
Very Big Week 17
Congratulations to everyone as collectively we came within 2 points of the highest BUMS score ever (set in 2005) as we totalled 519 points. That’s the sixth highest average of all-time at 32.44 points per owner. And that was with 4 players on IR.
